MISSION
The mission of L.A. Focus Charities is threefold: to honor the vital role women of faith play in nurturing the next generation of leadership; to unite the African American faith community around critical issues such as the glaring disparities in health, representation, and other areas; and to produce events—including workshops and town halls—that empower the faith community. Additionally, L.A. Focus Charities offers a network of support for first ladies through life-changing programs designed to benefit the broader community.
Our Work
L.A. Focus Charities also awards scholarships to girls (ages 15-18) through an essay contest as part of our Annual First Ladies High Tea. This initiative (1) provides a platform for at-risk and underprivileged youth to express their dreams and aspirations through writing; (2) amplifies the voices of today’s youth on pressing issues like teen pregnancy, violence, and negative imagery; (3) celebrates at-risk youth who have overcome challenges through academic success; and (4) exposes young women to role models and mentors who can guide and inspire them. For many youth attendees, this exposure to accomplished women is nothing short of life changing.
Over 700 girls have taken part in our annual essay contest with winners receiving upwards of $150,000 in scholarship monies.
First Ladies High Tea Sizzle
Church Engagement
The First Ladies High Tea, conceived in 1997, plays a vital role in galvanizing the L.A. faith community by bringing together tastemakers and leaders from over 100 churches—women who wield significant influence in both the church and civic spheres. The event provides a powerful platform to address critical social issues such as homelessness, sex trafficking, breast cancer, HIV, and financial empowerment, while fostering meaningful partnerships between churches, corporate America, and civic leaders. These collaborations have led to increased resources and tangible impact, further strengthening the Black faith community’s grassroots outreach and amplifying its efforts to drive change and create lasting social good.
